It has been just three months since World Orphans partnered with Global Health Training to equip 65 women from our Haiti OVC program with Safe Birth Delivery Training. The glorious outcome of the church’s ministry to the community resulted in their first safe delivery just eight days following the training!
Rebecca Barlow, a Registered Nurse and World Orphans in-country missionary, has been following up with the ladies who participated in this training and inquiring about what specific skills have been most useful and what follow up training might be most helpful going forward.
Pictured below are four of the ladies from Pastor Gaston’s church who participated in the training.
When asked about the training, Celiane (pictured above) quickly, but timidly, raised her hand. Her face lit up as she shared “Eight days after the training, I delivered my niece’s baby.” Wow! Celiane said that she was nervous, but remembered everything, including how to deliver the placenta, which was “a little challenging.” It was her first time to deliver a baby and her first time to attend a birth! She glowed as she shared the details of bringing her “great niece” into the world.
Two other women have been using their blood pressure monitoring skills. Ginette helped her neighbor who has mild blood pressure issues. Mickerline said that her mom, Ginette, wasn’t feeling well, so she took her blood pressure and found that it was dangerously high according to what had been taught. She knew to take her mom to the doctor immediately, and the doctor confirmed the high blood pressure reading, gave her medicine, and now she is much better.
What a joy to know that in Haiti, where 1 in every 47 deliveries result in death, the church is being equipped with knowledge that will help to save lives–lives that matter to their families, to their community, to the church, and to Jesus.
